1. VITRIFIED TILE FLOORING – SCOPE
1.1 Scope Of Work

Laying of vitrified / ceramic / porcelain tiles on floors, walls, and skirting using cement mortar (bedding) or tile adhesives. Includes surface preparation, fixing, grouting, and sealing for residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

1.2 Reference Standards

IS 15622 (Vitrified tiles), IS 13630 (Ceramic tiles), ASTM C1028 (slip resistance), manufacturer guidelines.

Bed thickness20–40 mm3–6 mm (thin bed)
MixingCement + sand + waterReady mix + water
Bond strengthModerateHigh (≥1 N/mm²)
Curing time7 days before grouting24–48 hours
Ideal forLarge area, uneven baseWalls, renovation, even floors
Consumption (per m²)0.02–0.03 m³ sand + 4–6 kg cement3–5 kg (bag coverage 4–5 m²/20kg)

Adhesive grade: C1 (standard) for interior, C2 (flexible) for exterior / large tiles.

Industry trend: Adhesives increasingly preferred for vitrified tiles >600mm due to lower thickness, faster setting, and reduced dead load .

📦 MATERIAL CONSUMPTION (per 10m² floor)
MethodMaterialQuantity (10m²)Remarks
Cement mortar (30mm bed)Cement1.8 – 2.2 bags (90–110 kg)Mix 1:4 (cement:sand)
Sand0.25 – 0.30 m³Coarse sand (zone II)
Waterproofing (optional)0.5 – 1.0 kgfor wet areas
Thin bed adhesiveTile adhesive40–50 kg (2–2.5 bags of 20kg)Coverage 4–5 m²/20kg
Primer1 litre (approx)for concrete base
Grout (both methods)Grout powder (white/grey)2–4 kg (depends on joint width)2–3 mm joint

Add 5% wastage for tiles; adhesive coverage may vary with notch trowel size (6mm vs 10mm).

5. TILE LAYING PROCEDURE
5.1 Surface Preparation
  • Base must be clean, dry, and level. Apply primer for adhesive method. For cement mortar, dampen surface.
5.2 Bedding / Adhesive application
  • Cement mortar: Spread 20–40mm thick, leveled with screed.
  • Adhesive: Apply with notched trowel (6mmx6mm for small tiles, 10mm for large).
5.3 Tile Fixing & Leveling
  • Place tiles with gentle press, use spirit level, insert tile spacers (2–3mm). For large vitrified tiles, use leveling clips.
5.4 Grouting & Finishing
  • After 24h (adhesive) or 7 days (cement), fill joints with grout, clean excess, seal if required.
⏱️ LABOUR OUTPUT – FLOOR & WALL TILING
ActivitySkilled mason + 1 helperRemarks
Floor tiling (cement mortar, up to 600x600)12–16 m²includes bedding & fixing
Floor tiling (adhesive, large tiles >600mm)10–14 m²slower due to leveling system
Wall tiling (adhesive, up to 300x600)8–12 m²vertical work slower
Skirting / borders15–20 linear meterscutting and fixing
Grouting (floor/wall)30–40 m²after tile fixing

Output varies with tile size, pattern complexity, and site conditions.

🔲 JOINTS, SPACERS & SEALANTS
Recommended joint widths
  • Floor tiles ≤600mm: 2–3 mm
  • Floor tiles >600mm: 3–5 mm (to accommodate movement)
  • Wall tiles: 1.5–2.5 mm
  • Expansion joints: every 4–5m in large areas, filled with silicone sealant.
Movement joints

In large floors ( >25m² ), provide expansion joints at doorways or columns. Use flexible sealant over backer rod.
